Suspected extremists bombed a major bridge on a northeast highway, further limiting access to base camps in the Sambisa Forest where scores of kidnapped girls are believed to be held captive, witnesses and the leader of a group fighting Boko Haram said Monday.

Gunmen destroyed most of the bridge on the road between Maiduguri and Biu on Saturday night, the spokesman for the Nigerian Vigilante Group, Abbas Gava, told The Associated Press.
"The bridge has now collapsed and it is impossible for vehicles to cross over the bridge from either side," he said. It is the fourth major bridge destroyed in the area in recent months.

The reports come as a new video shows Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau crowing over recent victories including two explosions at a fuel depot in Lagos that the government tried to cover up.
It would be the first reported bombing by Boko Haram in Lago. At least four people died in the June 25 blasts, including an alleged female suicide bomber, according to Western diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

GERMANY WINS 2014 WORLD CUP

Better late than never -- Germany won its fourth World Cup after a tense 1-0 victory over Argentina on Sunday.
Mario Gotze's strike, seven minutes from the end of extra time, ensured Germany ended its 24-year wait for glory at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium.
Deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes, it was left to substitute Gotze to provide the game's defining moment with a touch of magic.
The Bayern Munich star took Andre Schurrle's pass on his chest before displaying exquisite technique to volley the ball past Sergio Romero.
Argentina, which was beaten by West Germany 1-0 at the 1990 World Cup, rallied briefly but failed to find an equalizer.
Even with the mercurial Lionel Messi in attack, Argentina rarely looked like finding a way back into the game.
Earlier, Gonzalo Higuain wasted a glorious opportunity in the first half for Argentina, while Benedikt Howedes headed against the post as Germany threatened before the interval.
Argentina, playing in its first final since it was beaten by West Germany in 1990, should have forged ahead early in the second half.
Messi, the Argentina captain, latched onto Lucas Biglia's through ball but inexplicably fired his effort wide of the far post.
Germany ended the 90 minutes stronger with Andre Schurrle and Toni Kroos both failing to hit the target when well placed.
But with neither side able to find a breakthrough, the contest moved into an additional 30 minutes.
And it was left to Gotze to secure victory in emphatic style as Germany claimed its first World Cup triumph since 1990.-CNN

JONATHAN HAILS WOLE SOYINKA ON HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY

Wole Soyinka, uno de los pocos africanos ganadores del Premio Nobel ...

President Goodluck Jonathan praised compatriot Wole Soyinka, the 1986 Nobel literature prize laureate who turns 80 on Sunday, for using his talents to promote good governance.
Jonathan applauded Soyinka's "life-long dedication and indefatigable commitment to using his acclaimed genius and talents, not only in the service of the arts, but also for the promotion of democracy, good governance and respect for human rights in Nigeria, Africa and beyond."
Dozens of literary and artistic events have been staged across the country in the runup to the birthday of the globally renowned literary icon.
Former dictator General Yakubu Gowon, who jailed the writer for about two years during Nigeria's 1967-70 civil war, attended a lecture in Soyinka's hometown on Friday, saying: "I have come to Abeokuta for the sake of this particular man, to honour him."
Gowon imprisoned Soyinka on suspicion that he supported Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who declared a state of "Biafra" in 1967, plunging the nation into war.
An estimated one million people died in the 30-month-long war, mostly of disease and starvation.
Born on July 13, 1934, in Abeokuta, capital of southwest Ogun state, Soyinka cut his literary teeth in the 1950s at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria's premier university, where he studied English literature.
The poet, novelist and playwright has around 30 published works to his name, most of which satirise Nigerian society.
A harsh critic of military, corrupt or inept governments, he fled the country during the regime of General Sani Abacha in the 1990s when the government hounded critics including journalists and academics. - AFP

NETHERLAND DEFEATS BRAZIL AGAIN WITH A 3-0 GOAL

Arjen Robben (AP)

Football World cup hosts Brazil suffered a second defeat in a row, after they were beaten 3-0  by the Netherlands in the third/fourth place playoff in Brasilia on Saturday. Disastrous defending was again at the heart of the problem, after Brazil conceded a penalty in just the second minute.
Dutch forward Arjen Robben burst past returning Brazilian skipper Thiago Silva just outside the area in the inside right channel, forcing the centre back to haul the speedster down, and he duly tumbled in the area, leaving the referee no choice but to award the penalty.
Silva somehow managed to avoid being sent off, considering that he was the last defender, and was booked for the foul. Dutch skipper Robben van Persie emphatically powered his left-footed spot kick high to Julio Cesar's left, to give the Netherlands the lead.

More woeful defending followed for the second Dutch goal in the 17th minute when instead of heading a cross from the right out for a corner, much-maligned defender David Luiz headed it back towards the penalty spot, with disastrous conséquences. The ball found the outstretched boot of defender Daley Blind, who composed himself well to rifle a right-footed volley into the top corner.
Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum swept home the third late into second half stoppage time after replacement defender Daryl Janmaat delivered a a dangerous low cross from the right-- news24
